Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common and confusing symptom as there are many causes. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause so as to choose the appropriate treatment. Hip pain involves any pain in or around the hip joint. Hip-related pain is not always felt directly over the hip. Instead, you may feel groin pain or pain in the middle of your thigh. Similarly, pain in the hip may actually reflect a problem in your back.

Common types of hip pain:

  • Arthritis hip pain from degeneration
  • Bursitis hip pain from overuse or injury
  • Tendonitis from repetitive or strenuous activity
  • Strain or sprain of muscles and that attach to the groin area
  • Low-back strain
  • Sciatica

Pelvic Pain

Pelvic and groin pain are also common and have many causes. For women, pelvic pain may originate in gynecologic areas (cervix, uterus, or ovaries). In men, groin pain may originate in the testes or scrotum. Sometimes the cause is unknown. Disorders that can cause pelvic pain and groin pain may be:

  • intestinal
  • urinary
  • musculoskeletal
  • nerve related
  • activity related (intense or prolonged activities such as cycling or running)

Pelvic pain and hip pain relief therapy at the Feldenkrais Center understands:

  • the spine must rest on the pelvis in a way that allows the hips to glide easily in their sockets when the legs move
  • the hip is a ball and socket joint that must attach to the pelvis in a very particular way for the legs to work well
  • the spine, hips, and legs must function as a system or the muscles in the pelvic and groin areas can be stressed
  • stressed pelvic and groin muscles can result in chronic pain

The Feldenkrais Method approaches your pelvic, groin and hip pain systematically and realizes that faulty interactions between various/related parts of the body cause strain on the entire system. For example, by contributing to an altered position of the pelvis and hip, a rigid ankle or old knee injury could be the cause of hip pain. We test the entire system to find the source of the pain so that functional relationships can be restored.

Because the pelvis is so vital to the proper function of the rest of the musculoskeletal system, you will receive therapy that involves the whole body, including feldenkrais exercises. The goals are to optimize the function of the pelvis as it relates to the upper and lower body, and prevent your injury from coming back.

At the Feldenkrais Center, our approach to treating the causes of your pain allows a fast and effective course of treatment. Many patients report substantial relief after less than a month.
